Mariely Lopez-Santana is an associate professor of Political Science at the Schar School of Policy and Government at George Mason University. She received her PhD from the University of Michigan. Her main field of study is Comparative Politics with an emphasis on States' responses to a variety of problems, including inequality, labor market exclusion, and gang membership. She studies welfare states, social policy, governance issues, multilevel governance, and fiscal crisis. She has published on the topics of Europeanization, contemporary changes to welfare states, new modes of governance, decentralization, and responses of States to gangs. She is the author of The New Governance of Welfare States in the United States and Europe: Between Decentralization and Centralization in the Activation Era (SUNY Press, 2015). Prior to joining George Mason University, she was a Max Weber Post-Doctoral Fellow at the European University Institute. In addition, she has been an a Visiting Scholar in Brussels, Stockholm, Madrid, Barcelona, and Florence.
