Prof. Karin Hannes specializes in the development of innovative research methods and models to respond to emerging social challenges, with a particular focus on arts-based, place-based and multisensory research designs as well as qualitative research evidence synthesis as a meta-review technique. Part of her job is to test, evaluate and improve existing methods, techniques or d.a.t.a sets, or to re-appropriate them for use in a different study context. Her transdisciplinary research team 'SoMeTHin'K is active in the area of urban development, citizen science, art/design and technology, social and behavioral sciences, public health and the global sustainable development context. The group develops theoretical frameworks as a basis for understanding how complex phenomena should be approached and organized from an inclusive, critical research perspective. Her analytical approach is multimodal in nature, combining numerical and textual data with sensory data. Prof. Hannes contributes extensively to theoretical discussions on quality assessment of disruptive types of scholarly output as well as the role of qualitative and artistic research practices in an evidence-based discourse. As an academic activist, she challenges current research dissemination standards and engages in creative research practices for public outreach. Prof. Hannes chairs the European Network of Qualitative Inquiry and partners KU Leuven's Institute for the Future. She is involved in the Interdisciplinary Arts-Based Research Global Initiative and the Qualitative Evidence Synthesis Methods group of the Campbell Collaboration.
